Catherine Mae Johnson Painter Shifflett, 95, of Powhatan, widow of Alfred Painter and Lynn Shifflett, passed away October 15, 2016. Catherine was born April 16, 1921 as the fifth child of the late Grace Taylor and Tom Riley Johnson of Charlottesville. Upon the death of her mother, as a young child, she moved to Covington with her father and step mother the late Rena Lambert. Catherine was a faithful member of Buckingham Baptist Church, member of the Moose lodge and served on several committees She retired from Watkins Nursery after many years of service. She is survived by her children, Mae Helmintoller (John) of Covington, Ann Sexton (Robert) of Powhatan, Joan Wood of Dillwyn, Kathy Shifflett of Powhatan; sister, Eunice Craft of Lowmoor; four grandchildren, Thomas Wood (Lisa), Keith Wood, Danny Wood, Cindy Helmintoller-Quantz (John); God grandson, Gary Hurd (Stephanie); two great grandchildren, Jayne and James. She was preceded in death by one grandson, Bobby Lee Sexton; son in law, Philip Wood; two brothers, James & Earl Johnson; two sisters, Alice Lawhorne and Margaret Varner; four step sisters, Nellie Kreghton, Alice Lockhart, Gladys Staton, Virginia Oliver. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 6 to 8pm in the Bennett & Barden Funeral Home, 3215 Anderson Hwy.(Rt.60), Powhatan and where services will be held Thursday at 1pm.
