Charles Romas Shook

August 11, 1931 — October 23, 2015

84, of Amelia, born August 11, 1931, died October 23, 2015 after a three-year battle with Myelodysplastic Syndrome (MDS). He is survived by his devoted wife of more than 65 years, Ala Shelton Shook; (3) three daughters, Cheryl Linthicum (John G. Lewis), Lisa Whitus (Ralph) and Tammie Hoard (Scott); brother, Donald Shook; sister, Linda Shook; nine (9) grandchildren, Greg Whitus (Candie), Drew Linthicum, Faith Handy (Jordan May), Ryan Linthicum (Misty Smith), Travis Whitus, Joel Linthicum, Wade Handy, and Lari Handy; two (2) great-grandchildren, Amie Whitus, and Kinsleigh Whitus; beloved extended family including sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Naomi Shelton Dickerson, Lela Shelton Davis (Ernest), Eldon Shelton (Guarnita). He has countless nieces, nephews, and special family friends all of whom he loved very much. He appreciated the visits, text messages, emails, and calls from his family and many friends as he spent those final weeks in the hospital. He was a veteran of the Korean War, and served as a Combat Construction Foreman in the 151st Engineer Battalion, B Company in Korea and was a Corporal (Technician) when he left the service. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Service Medal (with 2 Bronze Stars signifying 3 tours in-country), and the United Nations (Korean) Service Medal. He battled his disease with the same tenaciousness that he defended his country. There is currently no cure for MDS. The family would like to thank the doctors and staff of McGuire Veterans Hospital for the wonderful care given, especially those in Journey's Way, the Palliative Care Unit (1Q) during his final weeks with us. Family will receive friends Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Bennett & Barden Funeral Home, 3215 Anderson Hwy. (Rte. 60), Powhatan, where funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday. Interment will be at 3 p.m. in the Virginia Veterans Cemetery at Amelia. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Palliative Care Unit (Unit 1Q), McGuire Veterans Hospital, 1201 Broad Rock Blvd., Richmond, Va. 23249.
