Cora Lee Spain, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully at her home in Midlothian, Virginia, on August 2, 2024, surrounded by her loving family. She was born on December 1, 1942, in Dundas, Virginia, to Darcey Jackson Carroll and Agnes Virginia Lewis Carroll. Cora lived a life of love and unwavering support of her entire family.

Cora was predeceased by her parents and her siblings, Darcey, Jr., James, and Margaret. She leaves behind her devoted husband of 38 years, Wesley G. Spain, Jr., whom she cherished as her soul mate and the love of her life. Cora is survived by her children, Earl Parrish (Joyce), Debbie Rumsey (Chuck), Lynn Underwood (Louis), and Wanda Shackleferd (Terry), each of whom she adored and loved beyond measure.

Her legacy extends to her seven grandchildren, Ashley Rodriguez (Hugo), Victoria Ares (Mark), James Rowe (Caylea), Krystina Parrish (Mike), Brittany Parrish-Kelley (Matt), Kasey Newman (Lewis), and Phillip Eike. She was blessed with great-grandchildren, Adyson, Logan, Isabella, Caden, Kaylee, Rylie, Abigail, Elowen, Landree, Kayla, William, Thomas, Sadie, Rivers, Victoria, Nick and Arianna who brought immense joy to her life. Cora is also survived by her sister, Louise Wilson (Joe); sister-in-law Bette Gunderson (Arnold), and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins as well as her fur baby, Brooklyn.

A retired Vice President of the former Bon Air Cleaners, Cora loved NASCAR, camping, and cooking. She has been a faithful member of Skinquarter Baptist Church since 2007. Cora’s dedication to her family and her love for animals were central to who she was, reflecting her nurturing spirit and compassionate heart. She was a beacon of strength and the epitome of grace throughout her life.

Whether you knew her as Cora, Mom, Grandma, or Nana, Cora’s passing leaves a profound void in the hearts of those who knew her. She will be remembered as a pillar of her family, a symbol of enduring love, and a friend who touched countless lives with her gentle presence. Her legacy of strength and love of family will live on in the hearts of everyone who was honored to have met her.

While our hearts are broken here on earth, we know exactly where you are, in heaven. We’ll look for you by the bathtub filled with a beautiful rainbow of flowers.

The family would like to extend a special “thank you” for the care and support provided by Suncrest Hospice and Cora’s aide, Linda Lyles. Friends and family will gather on Wednesday, August 7th, from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at Bennett & Barden Funeral Home in Powhatan. The funeral service will be held on Thursday, August 8th, at 12:00 PM, with interment to follow at Dale Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Alzheimer's Association in honor of Cora Spain.
