Gary Lee Dean

Gary Lee Dean of Powhatan, VA, formerly of Somerset, KY and Broad Run, VA, departed this life on Wednesday, January 12, 2022. He is survived by his wife Carol Dean, his daughter Theresa Goodman (Taylor) and their children, son Gary Dean Jr, mother June Hall (Bill), sister Connie Kazowski and brother Lewis Dean (Karen), plus four nephews and a niece. He was preceded in death by his father Lewis Junior Dean.
Born in rural Ohio, Gary learned early in life what a hard work ethic was. After graduation, he joined the US Navy where he'd spend the next several years as a submariner. His time in the Navy and a keen eye for accountability led to his successful career as a defense contractor, from which he retired in 2018. When not designing and testing systems to protect the nation's military, he enjoyed time outdoors, all types of woodworking, and spending time with his beloved grandchildren, Michaela and Wyatt. Gary was a man of few words but enjoyed a cold beer and meeting new people as he moved around the country. Never one to waste money nor draw attention to himself, he would have quietly fussed at the fact that we're spending money on an obituary, much less one this long.
Services will be at Passion Community Church, 4400 Anderson Highway, Powhatan, VA on Saturday, January 22 at 2:00 PM. Reception to follow at the church. Gary was never one for formal dress, so don't go overboard on fancy clothes and getting your hair did.
