It is with great sadness the family of Captain George T Worsham, 100 years, died peacefully on October 14 at his residence near Powhatan, VA.
George was born and raised in Hopkinsville, KY May 24, 1924 where his family were farmers. At 18 in 1943 he joined the Merchant Marines. During WWII he received the Atlantic War Zone with Star medal for direct enemy combat when his ship was torpedoed and sunk by a German Uboat. He also received the Pacific War Zone and Mediterranean War Zone medals. In 2022 he was awarded by Congress the Congressional Gold Medallion. In 2023 he was invited to The White House for breakfast with the President and First Lady. He was also invited to lay a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier for the lost Merchant Mariners. After 35 years in the Merchant Marines where he rose to the rank of Master/Captain, he retired to St. Petersburg, FL.
In 1951 he married Margaret Jane Boyd. They were married for 52 years. Margaret Jane passed away in 2003. They had 3 children.
In 2004 he married Martha Nell Sullivan Bush in Kentucky. Martha had 3 children. They were married for 18 years until she passed away in 2021.
George was preceded in death by his first wife, Margaret Jane Boyd Worsham, his second wife, Martha Nell Sullivan Bush Worsham, his parents, Albert and Pansy Worsham and brother, Derwood James Worsham and grandchild Joshua Keaton.
George is survived by his brother, Hugh Worsham of Seattle, WA, 3 children, Thomas Worsham, Vicky Worsham and Sara Atkinson all living in Powhatan, VA., 3 step-children Rhonda (Kenneth) Waters, Allison (David) Grace and Victoria Keaton.
George had 11 grandchildren, Joshua (Emily) Purdum , Meghan Worsham, Caitlin (Michael) Schoeffel-Worsham, Matthew (Louisa) Atkinson, Jacob (Mackenzie) Atkinson, Kenneth Waters, Benjamin Waters, Adam Keaton, Brooke Riley, Clint Grace, Brayden Greenwell and 13 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Monday October 21 at noon with visitation at 11:30 am. The service will be in their chapel with a short graveside service at Powhatan Cemetery after.
