James Alexander Ransone, Jr., 88, of Powhatan, passed away September 8, 2016. He was born in Cartersville, Va. on July 24, 1928. The son of the late James Alex Ransone, Sr. and Eula Blanton Ransone and brother to the late Frances Lee London-Baker. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Mary Jane Goodwyn Ransone; daughter, Monte' Susan Ransone; sons, James A. Ransone, III (Linda Dowdy Ransone), Royce Goodwyn Ransone (Jill Townsend Ransone) all of Powhatan. He was known as "Daddy Jay" to four grandchildren, Stuart Hicks (Cassandra), Leanne Melton (Chris), Alex Ransone (Gabriel), Anna Ransone; four great grandchildren, Carter and Chase Melton, Allie Ransone and Katelynn Hicks; three nieces, Billie Lee London, Alexis London-Houch and Randy Robinson-Styers all of Flordia. Mr. Ransone served in the U. S. Army with the 32nd infantry division, a Purple Heart recipient and survivor of the battle at Chosin Resevoir, Korea. While in Korea his unit was awarded The Silver Star, two Bronze Service Oak Leafs and three Presidential Unit Citations. He was honorably discharged in 1952. He was a charter commander of the Powhatan chapter of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, life member of the Richmond Chapter of the DAV and charter member of the Chosin Few. Past president of the Chosin Few Hunt Club, a member of the Huguenot Academy Board of Directors, Master Mason of Powhatan Masonic Lodge #295 and served on the Goochland-Powhatan Disability Board. Upon retirement from Peoples Security Life/Monumental Life Insurance, he was the owner of Huguenot Insurance Agency and Chosin Restaurant. The family will receive friends Saturday 2 to 4 p.m. in the Bennett & Barden Funeral Home, 3215 Anderson Hwy.(Rt.60), Powhatan. Funeral services will be held in Red Lane Baptist Church at 3 pm Sunday. Interment Cartersville Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Powhatan Rescue Squad, P.O.Box 247 Powhatan, Va. 23139.
