James Lamar Benton, Sr., 76 of Powhatan, surrounded by his family, went to be with the Lord on January 20, 2013. He was the son of the late James Garland and Edna Mae Porter Benton and was preceded in death by his sisters, Norma Lanelle Benton and Nancy Louise Benton. He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Elizabeth Mabry Benton; daughters, Debra Moseley (Darrell), Mona Holmes (Robert), Judy Farr; sons, James L. Benton, Jr., Mark L. Benton (Martina); ten grandchildren, Ashley, Chris, Allen, Alex, Spencer, Hannah, Caleb, Joseph, Carter, Kayla; great grandson, Patrick; brother, Travis Benton (Sally). He graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of Richmond in 1982. He retired from Overnite Transportation after almost 25 years of service. Throughout his life he served his church and community by volunteering his time and efforts with organizations such as Coalition of Powhatan Churches, Pennies for Heaven and Relay for Life, among man others. He was a man who loved his family, God and country. He was respected and loved by many in the community and will be dearly missed. He is also mourned by his beloved cat, "Prissy"! The family will receive friends tonight from 5 to 8 pm in the Bennett Barden Funeral Home, 3215 Anderson Hwy. (Rt. 60), Powhatan and where funeral services will be held Wednesday 1 pm. Interment Powhatan Community Cemetery.
