James Warren McLaughlin

James Warren (Jim) McLaughlin, was born in Elkins, West Virginia on November 7, 1923 and died in Midlothian, Virginia on March 31, 2016. He was the youngest of eight children born to Dorcas Burns Snyder and Charles Henry McLaughlin. At the age of 18 he followed brothers Ralph, Mac, and George to the Washington DC area where he found work with the Department of Interior creating topographic maps of the Eastern U. S. After serving in the Army and returning to work, he met and married his wife Margaret in 1948. His work took them all over the Eastern half of the country and as far west as Indiana. He retired in 1978 to Smith Mountain Lake and lived there until 2013. He was a life-long fisherman and hunter and enjoyed gardening, and traveling the country but it was his devotion to family, friends, and his enduring love of Elkins for which he will be most remembered. Jim was preceded in death by his parents, siblings, and wife of 63 years, Margaret Williams Mclaughlin, infant son, Charles; son, John Warren McLaughlin and grandchildren J.R. Sheele and Meagan O'Neil. He is survived by his daughters, Sharon O'Neil, Jeannie McLaughlin, Mary Freedman and Kathleen McLaughlin; grandchildren, Warren Sheele, Charles Sheele, Katie O'Neil, Lauren Masengale, Ian Neyland and Claire Neyland; five great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews that he loved dearly.
