Katherine Shifflett

February 8, 1954 — March 22, 2025

Katherine Lynn Shifflett better known as Kathy, age 71, of Powatan, passed away on Saturday, March 22, 2025, peacefully at Bon Secour St. Francis Medical Center, Midlothian, VA.

Kathy was born in Covington, VA on February 8, 1954, the daughter of the late Kinsley Lynn Shifflett and the late Catherine Johnson Painter Shifflett. When Kathy was young, her favorite thing to do was to go fishing. Kathy became an extraordinary gardener. At an early age she developed a love of planting all types of flower and vegetable seeds. Kathy would share her love of plants by giving her family and friends various types of flowers and vegetables. She continued this love until her death. In addition to gardening, Kathy loved helping animals. Somehow the hurt animals, wild or domestic, would always find Kathy. She would nurse them back to health and release them back into the wild. She always took special care of her dogs. When Kathy was out gardening or taking care of animals, she would have her dogs by her side. Another love that Kathy performed daily was cooking and baking. She loved to create cookies, cakes, and candy for family and friends. Each year for birthdays and Christmas, Kathy would make her delicious baked goods to give as gifts. In addition, when you would stop by for a visit at Kathy’s house it always smelled so delicious from her daily cooking and baking and when you departed from your visit you would also leave with something either baked goods, flowers, or fresh vegetables. Kathy also enjoyed listening to music, especially gospel hymns by Elvis Presley. Anywhere Kathy would go she would make people laugh. She always knew what to say to put a smile on your face. This was a trait she inherited from her father. Kathy had a special name that only her nephews and niece would refer to her as Boo Boo. She got this special name for always being kind and taking care of them. She would fix up their scrabs. On their birthdays or special occasions, she would sign her cards, Love Boo Boo. Kathy resided with her sister Ann Sexton until she went to be with the Lord.

Kathy was preceded in death by her parents, Catherine and Lynn Shifflett, a brother-in-law Phillip Wood, and a nephew Bobby Lee Sexton that resided in the home with Kathy.

Kathy was loved by many and will deeply be missed. Her family will forever cherish the memories they had with her. Remaining to cherish Kathy’s memory are her three sisters and two brother-in-laws, Ann Sexton (Robert), Joan Wood, and Mae Helmintoller (John). She is also survived by four nephews and a niece, Thomas Wood (Lisa), Keith Wood, Danny Wood, Gary Hurd (Stephanie), and Cindy Helmintoller-Quantz (John). In addition, she is also survived by a great niece and great nephew, Jane Wood and James Helmintoller-Quantz.
