Kathryn C. Powers, May 7, 1947 - August 8, 2024. Kathryn, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully at her home in Powhatan VA on August 8, 2024.
She was preceded in death by her father Joseph Alton Cain Sr., mother, Louise McDonald Cain, older brother, Joseph Alton Cain Jr., and younger sister Vickie Jean Lambert. She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Henry Oscar Powers, daughters, Stephanie L. Ross of Raleigh, NC, and Melissa P. Moates (Kenneth) of Harlem, GA, grandson Bobby Ross of Raleigh, NC; sisters, Dinah Mauldin, Donna Holland, Marie Cain, and Nancy Pruett, and brother Johnny Cain, all of Bladen county, NC, along with numerous nieces and nephews.
Kathryn married Henry Oscar Powers on June 18, 1967, in Bladen County, North Carolina following a courtship during Oscar's deployment in the Vietnam War. The couple moved to Richmond VA and made Powhatan home in 1970.
Kathryn began her career with the Powhatan County Circuit Court in 1972 as a Deputy Clerk. She retired in 2014 as interim Clerk of Courts after Mr. William E. Maxey Jr. retired from service. She was very committed to her work and to the county.
In retirement, Kathryn enjoyed traveling the country with her husband in their RV, especially traveling out west. One favorite trip they had included driving to Washington state and going whale watching off the coast of Canada. Kathryn also enjoyed Listening to gospel music and would go to many concerts. Some of her favorites were the Dove Brothers, Dixie Melody Boys, the Gaither Vocal Band, and The Harvesters.
Kathryn was an avid reader and enjoyed romance novels; sometimes reading several books in one week. Another interest Kathryn had was going to auctions and casinos, she also had an impressive collection of hummingbirds.
A visitation will be held at Gospel Light Baptist Church at 2109 Anderson Hwy. Powhatan VA 23139, Wednesday, August 14, 2024, at 10 AM followed by a funeral service at 11 AM with a graveside service at the Amelia Veterans Cemetery at 2 PM.
In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations to be made to the American Cancer Society or Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation in Kathryn's honor.
