BARDEN
Larry w., 84, of Powhatan, born Dec. 15, 1932, died Friday, July 28, 2017. He was predeceased by his parents Edwin William Barden and Myra McNickle Barden. After serving his country for four years with the U.S. Navy in Korea, he came home to Richmond and entered his life- long calling as a police officer. After five years with the Richmond Police Dept., he joined the Virginia State Police and served 32 years as a trooper in area 6,later being promoted to Special Agent and polygraph examiner. After retirement from state police, Larry accepted a part-time possition with Powhatan Sheriff's Dept. He was proud to be back in uniform in any capacity. On Larry's 75th birthday, he received a congratulatory letter from our former Gov. Timothy Kaine. His reaction to this honor: "I hope he doesn't think I'm going to retire!". A long time member of St. Lukes Episcopal Church, Larry served three terms on the Vestry and as head of the Cemetery Committee for over 25 years.
He is survived by his wife of 47 years Mary Kuehl Barden; daughters Sarah Edwards (Tim) of North Carolina, Leah Thrope (Greg) of Chesterfield; stepson, Stephen D. Neese of South Carolina; brother William E. Barden; threegrandsons and neumerous neices and nephews. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Bennett & Barden Funeral Home, 3215 Anderson Hwy.(Rt.60), Powhatan. A memorial services will be Thursday, 11 AM in St. Luke's Episcopal Church, 2245 Huguenot Trail rd. Powhatan. A reception will follow in the Parish Hall. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to St. Luke's Building Fund.
