Mary Margaret Maxey Murphy left this world on April 30, 2022. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother as well as a professional in the insurance industry. Mary Margaret loved her family, farm life and Powhatan County.
Mary Margaret was born in Richmond, Virginia on June 15th, 1942 to Frank Roland and Willie (Moyer) Maxey. She grew up in Powhatan County on the family dairy farm locally known as Prospect Hill. Mary Margaret was always a hard worker, raising calves and doing other chores around the farm from a young age. Later in life she became determined to preserve her family’s legacy as a farming family. She loved to go “junking” and had a sharp eye for antiques worth repair or refinishing. She supported the local business community with her patronage, the Powhatan Free clinic, and her church.
After Mary Margaret graduated high school, she was soon at work as a switchboard operator. She found her way into a career in the insurance industry and was a cornerstone at Richardson, Harris and Boatwright Insurance Agency for many years. In addition to working full time outside the home, she also ran a plumbing business with her husband for 30+ years. She was a dedicated “Memaw” to her granddaughters and thrilled with her newest great grandson, Austin Ashrafi.
Mary Margaret was preceded in death by her parents Roland and Willie Maxey and her brother, Leslie Roland Maxey. She leaves behind her devoted husband, Ray Murphy, daughter Dora White Douglas, granddaughters, Samantha Ashrafi (Alex) and Sarah Beard (Ethan). She also leaves step-daughter Pamela Taylor and granddaughter Ashli Griffith along with five great-grand children.
Visitation is scheduled for 4:00 pm with a funeral service following at 5:00 pm on May 9, 2022 at Powhatan United Methodist Church, 2253 Rosson Rd, Powhatan, VA 23139. There is no graveside service.
