Master Sergeant James Alfred Kennedy, 67, of Powhatan, Virginia, suddenly passed on Monday, February 19th, 2024. James was born on May 31st, 1956 to Orsalina and Donald Kennedy in Akron, OH. After graduating from Garfield High School in 1974, he went on to enlist in the military at the age of 18. James was a proud veteran of the United States Army where he served 24 years, working his way up the ladder to his title Master Sergeant Kennedy. James embodied the best qualities: honesty, positivity, diligence, determination, perseverance, and unconditional love. He had an authentic joy for life and lived his life to the fullest. He spent most of his retirement traveling, totaling 70 plus countries at the time of his death. When he wasn't traveling, he was making sure his family's bellies were full, throwing ball to his dog Brownie, eating breakfast at the County Seat, and spending time with his grandchildren. James is proceeded in death by his mother Orsalina Kennedy (Lanham), father Donald Kennedy, sister Jane Zimmerman, and nephew Jeff Bonham. He is survived in death by his sister and best friend Jean Bonham (Steve); brother John Kennedy (Heather); sons James Arden Kennedy (Samantha) and Logan Kennedy; daughters Ashton Kennedy, Amy Wolcott (Andy), and Karen Smoak (Tommy); his most beloved grandchildren Michael, Sarah, DJ, Ryan, Parker, Lucy, Tucker, Calyn, and Scarlett; great grandchildren Lilli, Walker, Hunter, Joey, Spencer, Bradley; numerous nieces and nephews; and his dear friends Wayne Lloyd, Jesus Santana, and Eddie Maddox. As a proud member of the Powhatan community, his death was a great shock and a deep wound that will be felt by many. The family deeply appreciates everyone's support and finds comfort in how many lives James touched. They ask that you honor him by continuing to share his memory and legacy. The family will receive friends 2:00-4:00 PM Saturday, February 24th, at Bennett and Barden Funeral Home, where his service will follow at 4:00PM.
