Powhatan

Michael Edward Jarvis (Mike), 70, of Powhatan, VA, passed away, surrounded by loved ones on Sunday, May 12, 2024.  He is survived in love by his girlfriend, Oweda Childress of Mechanicsville; his daughter Jennifer (Adam) Lawson of Powhatan, daughter Stephanie (TJ) Waycaster of Powhatan; brother Gary (Linda) Jarvis of Powhatan, brother Kenny (Kathy) Jarvis of Kilmarnock; grandchildren Blake (Haley), Emmalee (Coby), Jaksyn, Tyler and CeCe; great-grandson Storm and previous wife Debbie Byrley. He was also loved by 3 nieces, 1 nephew and many friends, family and members of his Piankatank Shores community.

He was preceded in death by his father, Leon Jarvis, mother, Frances Boltz, step-mother Louise Jarvis and step-father Monk Boltz.

Mike was born in Charleston, SC to Leon and Frances Jarvis.  His family later moved to Richmond, VA.  He served in the Air Force and Air Force Reserves where he was stationed in SC. He settled down in Chesterfield, Va, later went to work with Capital Interior Contractors in 1984 and continued to work there through retirement in 2020.  Mike was known for his committed work ethic and worked hard for everything that he had. He loved to hunt, fish and follow the NASCAR circuit (Dale Earnhardt for life).  In 2004 he purchased a home in the river community of Piankatank Shores in Hartfield (Middlesex) VA.  It was here that he enjoyed life most, surrounded by friends, water, fishing and breathtaking sunsets.

In 2018, Mike was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease.  His family did everything possible to give him the best quality of life through his final years. In 2022 he was able to move to Powhatan to live with his daughters and to be surrounded by the love and care of family.  Mike’s story is not an easy one to tell, but is one that should bring awareness to the desperate need for advancement and care in the Alzheimer’s and dementia community and in the behavioral health field.  Please, in lieu of flowers, consider donating to the Alzheimer’s Association.  Also, please reach out to your local legislators, tell his story and help us fight for better care, for patients and for Veterans.

Services will be announced and held at a later date.
