Shirley M. Townsend, 86, went to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on May 27, 2024, surrounded by her loving family. She has joined her husbands, Robert E. Coleman and Edward F. Townsend who proceeded her in death. She was also proceeded in death by her parents, Wesley F. and Hazel Morris, her siblings Alease Thomas, Rodney Morris (Ercelle), Olin Morris (Thelma), Gene Morris (Barbara), and Sterling Morris. She is survived by her three daughters Patricia Faith Barden (Ronnie), Valerie C. Nunnelly (Charles), Roberta Dawn Holliday and step-daughter Debbie Wray (Jerry) and 11 grandchildren, Amanda F. Hill (Chris), Sam Barden (Beverly), Donald J. Arbaugh (Merideth), Heather R. Johnston (Donnie), Rusty Robertson (Shannelle), Amy Rowe (Ryan), Kimberly Holliday, Joel Holliday, John Holliday, Hannah Holliday and Kayla Wray. Shirley was also blessed with 19 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great granddaughter. She is also survived by her only sister-in-law, Janice Johnson along with 9 nieces and nephews.
Raised in Amelia, VA she was known for her jitterbug dancing and bubbly personality. Once married she lived most of her life in Powhatan, VA caring for her family as a young wife and mother. In her later years she learned to play a bass guitar and sang in a local country band. Shirley was a self-taught seamstress and learned the many advantages of herbs and vitamins. Mostly, Shirley was known for being a woman of faith at her church and a social butterfly. With her friendly personality and beautiful smile that made everyone feel welcome, Shirley’s kindness, generosity, and loving spirit will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
A celebration of Shirley’s life will be held on July 20, 2024 at 11:00am at Salem Methodist Church, 11221 Clementown Rd., Amelia, VA.
