Susan Heywood Dameron, born March 9, 1946, left us on the evening of March 17, 2023. She was surrounded by her family as she went.
Susan, of Huntington, West Virginia, taught for thirty years in the state of Virginia. She retired from Providence Middle School, where she taught 8th grade physical science. She was a ballerina, a director of theater, as well as a choreographer. She helped with stage productions at Providence, and in her early years helped with the Miss Virginia pageant.
As a biology major with a minor in English from Marshall University, she was passionate about animals. She used to tell her kids that dogs and cats would seemingly follow her home, and her mother often felt like she lived in a menagerie. She always had a way with animals, forming strong connections with them instantly. As an avid reader, you could always find her with a book, or in later years, her iPad, in hand, reading her favorite authors such as Clive Cussler, Patricia Cornwell, James Patterson, and Mary Higgins Clark.
Susan was extremely devoted her family as their Mom and later as Nana to her seven grandchildren. She was creative and resourceful, making clothing and costumes for her kids when they were growing up. She was always willing and ready to help her loved ones when they needed it.
After retiring, Susan began traveling with her son Billy. Together, they cruised four times to the Bahamas, and visited The Most Magical Place on Earth two to four times a year for the last 11 years. She loved Disney, and enjoyed being a kid again every time she went. Known by many cast members, her presence will be greatly missed.
She leaves behind her three children: Jimmy, Billy, and Barkley, Jimmy and Barkley's spouses: Catherine and Tommy, her six grand children: Colbie, Madilyne, Sterling, Trinity, Charlie, Triscuit, and Hayden, her sister, Jane Boylin or Huntington, West Virginia, and her former husband, Jim.
She will reunite with her Mother and Father, Emily and William Heywood, her brother, Billy, her aunt Catherine (better known as Kitty), as well as other family and friends.
A service in her memory will be Saturday, March 25th at 2:00pm at Bennett & Barden Funeral Home, located at 3215 Anderson Highway, Powhatan, VA 23139 . Her family will begin receiving guests an hour prior to the service. A reception will be held that same afternoon starting at 4:00pm at The Charleston Club, located at 17754 Twin Falls Lane, Moseley, VA 23120.
In lieu of flowers, her family has asked that donations please be made in her name to the Autism Society of Central Virginia, ascv.org, and to the Richmond SPCA, richmondspca.org
