Thelma L. Whitaker, 98, of Powhatan, passed away December 4, 2016 in Richmond. Thelma was born in King William County on June 26, 1918. She was predeceased by her husband, James W. Whitaker. She is survived by her three children, Yvonne W. Cole of Lanexa; Linda W. Onorati of Richmond; and K. Wayne Whitaker, Sr. of Powhatan; six grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren, two great great grandchildren, and her brother, Carrol Lipscomb of Gloucester. Thelma worked for the Bank of Powhatan for more than thirty years. She was a devout member of Graceland Baptist Church for over fifty years, where she taught Sunday School. She served the Lord faithfully throughout her life, and found happiness discussing her faith. Thelma loved the Smoky Mountains and preferred cooler weather over heat for much of her life. There will be a visitation on Tuesday from 5 to 7 pm in the Bennett & Barden Funeral Home, 3215 Anderson Hwy.(Rt.60), Powhatan. Funeral services will be on Wednesday at 1pm in the Graceland Baptist Church, 975 Dorset Rd., Powhatan. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Graceland Baptist Church, or Powhatan Fire and Rescue.
